Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police Book Meta India Chief Over Social Media Posts Allegedly Aimed at PM Modi

Cybercrime police in Hyderabad have registered cases against the operators of multiple Facebook and Instagram accounts, along with Metas India head, over allegedly morphed and objectionable social media content targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led protests over the NEET paper leak.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the complaint was lodged on July 29 at around 7:40 PM by T. Saikiran Goud, a 32-year-old BJP Telangana social media core committee member. Goud, who resides near Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Bhavan in Nampally, Hyderabad, claimed that while browsing social media earlier that day, he found several reels and posts that he alleged were derogatory toward the Prime Minister and carried content harmful to national unity.

In his complaint, Goud submitted 20 Instagram and Facebook URLs containing the disputed posts and urged the police to investigate. He alleged that the content could spread misinformation, incite hatred, promote hostility, and pose a threat to national security. The complainant also requested authorities to preserve all digital evidence, identify the individuals behind the social media accounts, and seek user information from Meta Platforms as part of the investigation. Additionally, he sought legal action against Meta, alleging that the company failed to prevent the circulation of the objectionable and allegedly manipulated content on its platforms.

Acting on the complaint, ASI K. Hari Ram of the Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police Station registered a case under Sections 66(C) and 67 of the Information Technology Act, along with Sections 353(2) and 336(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The investigation has since been assigned to Inspector P. Jayashankar, who will oversee the probe into the matter.
