Leaving a secure job in the United States to build a career in agriculture may sound like an unlikely choice, but entrepreneur Shashi Kumar took that path. After spending years in the technology sector, including a long stint at Wipro, Kumar turned his attention to farming and launched an initiative aimed at improving the lives and incomes of farmers. According to a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) by a tech professional named Vikas, Kumar’s entrepreneurial journey was anything but easy. The venture reportedly came close to financial collapse several times during its early years. Despite repeated setbacks, Kumar continued to pursue his vision through his company, Akshayakalpa.
Kumar reportedly completed his B.Tech from Bangalore University and worked at Wipro for around 12 years before leaving his US-based job. Rather than continuing in the corporate world, he chose to work directly with farmers and develop a sustainable agricultural business. The decision also created difficulties within his family. Vikas claimed that Kumar’s father stopped speaking to him for nearly eight years because he did not want his son to pursue the same profession in which he had struggled.
The company’s initial years were marked by severe financial pressure. According to the social media post, Akshayakalpa came close to bankruptcy six times during its first nine years. Kumar’s wife reportedly contributed Rs 30 lakh from her savings, helping the business stay afloat during some of its most difficult periods. The venture has since grown significantly. Vikas claimed that Akshayakalpa now works with around 2,800 farmers and pays each farmer approximately Rs 1.28 lakh per month. The company’s annual payments to farmers are reportedly around Rs 480 crore. The post further claimed that Akshayakalpa generates about Rs 60 crore in profit every month, highlighting the dramatic turnaround from its financially difficult early years.
From Risky Decision to Business Success: Kumar’s story has attracted attention because of the contrast between his earlier corporate career and his eventual success in agriculture. What began as a risky decision to leave a well-established IT career reportedly evolved into a large-scale agricultural enterprise. The story was widely shared on social media, with the post receiving more than 60,000 views and hundreds of likes. Many users praised Kumar’s persistence and his efforts to create better earning opportunities for farmers.
One commenter wished him well and suggested expanding the model to states such as Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Another user said they had tried Akshayakalpa’s chaach and praised its taste, while noting that its price was relatively high. Kumar’s journey illustrates the challenges that can accompany entrepreneurship: a promising idea may face years of financial uncertainty before achieving stability. His experience also highlights how a decision that initially appears risky can eventually develop into a sizeable business when backed by persistence and a clear focus on the market.
