Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has been taken back to Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, just hours after he was shifted to a hospital in Islamabad for a medical examination. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder was moved from prison to Shifa International Hospital following directions from Pakistans Supreme Court. The transfer came amid continuing concerns over Khans health and demands from his family and political supporters for access to specialised medical treatment.
Khan, who has been imprisoned since August 2023, was examined at the Islamabad hospital before being returned to jail. His brief hospital stay drew significant attention in Pakistan, particularly because his medical condition has been a recurring issue during his imprisonment. Khans lawyers and supporters have repeatedly raised concerns about his health and have sought greater access to doctors of their choice. They have also alleged that his medical needs have not been adequately addressed in prison. Authorities, however, have maintained that Khan is receiving appropriate medical care and that there was no immediate requirement for him to remain in hospital after the examination.
The Supreme Courts intervention followed legal efforts seeking better medical facilities for the former prime minister. The court had directed authorities to facilitate a medical assessment and allow relevant specialists to examine him. His return to Adiala Jail means that the former premier remains in custody while his legal battles continue. Khan faces multiple cases and convictions, which he and his political party have consistently described as politically motivated. Pakistani authorities have rejected those allegations.
Khans imprisonment has remained a major political issue in Pakistan, with PTI continuing its campaign for his release. His supporters have also kept pressure on the government over his treatment in prison. The latest hospital transfer and subsequent return to jail are likely to keep attention focused on Khans health as well as his continuing legal and political confrontation with Pakistans authorities. For now, the former prime minister remains at Adiala Jail following the short medical visit to Islamabad.
