Mumbai Police have firmly stated that they have arrested the correct individual in connection with the stabbing of actor Saif Ali Khan, despite circulating rumors suggesting that the wrong man might have been apprehended. Saif Ali Khan, who was attacked in his Mumbai home on the early hours of January 16, suffered five stab wounds to his back, wrist, neck, shoulder, and elbow during what appeared to be a burglary. He was rushed to Lilavati Hospital in an autorickshaw by his friend and made a recovery, returning home within a week. The police have categorically denied reports indicating that the fingerprints collected from the crime scene did not match the arrested suspect, Shariful Islam. Additional Commissioner of Police Paramjit Singh Dahiya addressed the media on Tuesday, asserting that the investigation had gathered substantial physical, technical, and oral evidence linking Islam to the crime, leaving no doubt about his involvement. The police clarified that they have not yet received any official fingerprint report, further rejecting claims that the evidence did not align with Islams fingerprints.
Shariful Islam, a 19-year-old man, was arrested on January 19 after a 70-hour manhunt. He was apprehended near Hiranandani Estate in Kasarvadavali, Thane, which is around 35 kilometers from Saif Ali Khans residence in Bandra. After his arrest, Islam was remanded in police custody. In court, Islams lawyer argued that the accusations against his client were false and suggested that Islam had been made a scapegoat in a high-profile case involving a celebrity. The lawyer emphasized that the case was receiving extra attention due to Khan’s fame. Further complicating the case, Mumbai Police have recorded the statement of a woman from West Bengal, whose Aadhar Card was allegedly used by Islam to buy a SIM card. This revelation has added another layer of investigation into Islams activities leading up to the attack. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also spoke out in support of the police investigation, urging that no confusion be created regarding the case. He reassured the public that the police were handling the case appropriately and that they would bring the investigation to its logical conclusion.
Meanwhile, the family of a man detained earlier in Chhattisgarh, who was initially considered a suspect in the attack on Saif Ali Khan, has voiced strong criticism of the police. The father of the man, Akash, claimed that the polices wrongful detention of his son had caused irreversible damage to their lives. He accused the police of ruining his sons future, pointing out that Akash had lost his job and had his marriage called off due to the mistaken identification. The family is now questioning who should be held accountable for the harm caused to Akash’s life and future prospects. Despite these challenges and public backlash, the police have insisted that they are following the correct investigative procedures and are confident in the evidence that points to Shariful Islam as the perpetrator of the attack on Saif Ali Khan.
