Delhi Traffic Alert: Diversions Likely for 4 Hours Today Amid BRICS Motorcade Rehearsal; Check Timings and Affected Routes

Delhi is set to witness traffic restrictions for four hours on Tuesday as authorities conduct a motorcade rehearsal ahead of the upcoming BRICS Summit. The Delhi Traffic Police has issued an advisory asking commuters to plan their journeys in advance as movement along several important roads is expected to be regulated between 11 am and 3 pm.

The rehearsal is part of security and traffic preparations for the BRICS Leaders’ Summit, which will be held at Bharat Mandapam from September 11 to 13. With foreign leaders and senior delegations expected to attend the summit, authorities are testing the movement of motorcades and the arrangements along key routes in the capital. According to the traffic advisory, restrictions will affect more than 35 roads and several major junctions across New Delhi and parts of central and south Delhi. Important roads likely to experience diversions or regulated traffic include Sardar Patel Marg, Mother Teresa Crescent, Teen Murti Marg, Akbar Road, Tees January Marg, Rajesh Pilot Marg, Subramaniam Bharti Marg, Mathura Road, Moti Lal Nehru Marg, Dr Zakir Hussain Marg, Africa Avenue Road, Satya Marg, Shanti Path, Janpath, Ashoka Road, Barakhamba Road and Tolstoy Marg.

Several other routes, including Niti Marg, Panchsheel Marg, APJ Abdul Kalam Road, Press Enclave Road, Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg, Joseph Broz Tito Marg and Lala Lajpat Rai Marg, are also covered by the traffic management plan. Traffic will be regulated at a number of important junctions as the rehearsal convoy moves through the city. Motorists approaching Mathura Road, central Delhi and the New Delhi district may encounter temporary stoppages before being redirected to alternative routes. Similar arrangements will be implemented around Patel Chowk, the RML Hospital roundabout, Dhaula Kuan Flyover and Moti Bagh Flyover.

The airport and Gurgaon corridors are also expected to see diversions. Traffic from Dhaula Kuan towards Sardar Patel Marg may be redirected through alternative routes, while vehicles travelling from Moti Bagh towards the airport and south-west Delhi may be diverted towards Rao Tula Ram Marg. Mathura Road will also be closely regulated during the exercise, particularly near routes leading towards Bharat Mandapam. Depending on the movement of the rehearsal convoy, traffic may be temporarily stopped or diverted through nearby roads.

The traffic police has advised commuters to use public transport during the four-hour period, with the Delhi Metro expected to provide a more reliable alternative to road travel. People travelling to the airport, railway stations, hospitals or other time-sensitive destinations have been asked to leave early and keep additional travel time in hand. Parking restrictions will also be enforced along several controlled stretches. Motorists have been advised against parking near the affected routes, as vehicles left in restricted areas could obstruct traffic management operations.

Emergency and essential-service vehicles will be given priority during the traffic restrictions. The police has also asked motorists to cooperate with traffic personnel and follow diversion signs instead of attempting to enter roads that have been temporarily closed. The rehearsal comes ahead of the BRICS Summit, making it an important test of Delhi’s security and traffic arrangements before the arrival of foreign leaders. While the restrictions are scheduled to remain in place from 11 am to 3 pm, commuters could experience congestion on surrounding roads as traffic is diverted from the main motorcade corridors. Authorities have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel through the affected areas during the rehearsal window and check traffic updates before beginning their journey.
