Delhi Road Inspection Row: Man Filming Minister Was Earlier Named in Assault Case

A man who filmed Delhi Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Verma during a road inspection in west Delhi had earlier been named in an alleged assault case involving a Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) sanitation worker, according to police records cited in media reports. The man, identified as Sahib Singh, was recording the minister during an inspection in the Tilak Nagar area when a confrontation took place. A video of the incident circulated on social media and showed Verma reaching toward Singh’s phone before slapping him. The incident has since led to a political dispute between the BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

According to reports, Singh was arrested in June in connection with a case registered at the Tilak Nagar police station following a complaint by an MCD sanitation worker. The complainant had alleged that he was pulled from a garbage collection vehicle and assaulted. Police reportedly investigated the complaint and examined CCTV footage before naming Singh in the case.

Singh was later released on bail. The allegations in the earlier case have not been established by a court, and his arrest should not be treated as a finding of guilt. The latest controversy began during Verma’s inspection of a recently laid road. AAP MLA Jarnail Singh and his associates were also present at the location and had raised questions about the quality of the roadwork. Footage from the spot showed portions of the road surface being examined while Singh recorded the proceedings on his mobile phone.

During the exchange, Verma was seen pushing down Singh’s phone and slapping him. Security personnel subsequently intervened and separated the two. Singh later approached the police with allegations concerning the incident. The minister, meanwhile, has offered a different account, alleging that people associated with the AAP MLA had abused his family and disrupted the inspection.

The incident has become another point of political confrontation between the BJP and AAP in Delhi. While AAP leaders have questioned the minister’s conduct, Verma has defended his position and argued that the circumstances leading to the confrontation should also be considered. Police are examining the complaints linked to the road inspection incident. The earlier assault case involving Singh and the latest confrontation are separate matters and will be dealt with according to the respective legal processes.
