Delhi Content Creator Amir Shokeen Faces Backlash Over Alleged Racial Abuse of Tripura Youth

Delhi-based content creator Amir Shokeen has faced widespread criticism over a viral video allegedly showing him making racially offensive remarks towards a young man from Tripura. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has condemned the alleged conduct and indicated that action would be taken, while authorities in Tripura have also sought intervention in the matter. The incident has sparked fresh debate over racial discrimination against people from Northeast India, with social media users and political leaders demanding accountability for the alleged harassment.

The Youth TIPRA Federation (YTF), the youth wing of the Tipra Motha Party, reportedly filed a police complaint in Agartala on October 21, accusing Shokeen of racial harassment and making derogatory remarks about an indigenous youth from Tripura. The complaint calls for an investigation and coordination between the police forces of Tripura and Delhi.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju strongly criticised the alleged behaviour, drawing attention to the need to address racial discrimination against people from the Northeast. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has also directed the states Director General of Police to coordinate with Delhi Police regarding the allegations. Following the controversy, Shokeen reportedly issued apology videos on social media. He claimed that the interaction was scripted and that he knew the young man featured in the video. He also expressed regret over the hurt caused to people from Tripura.

The explanation has failed to put an end to the criticism, with many questioning whether racial remarks can be justified as entertainment or a prank. The incident has also renewed calls for social media creators to exercise greater responsibility when producing content involving other people and their identities. People from Northeast India have frequently raised concerns about discriminatory comments and stereotypes based on their physical appearance, ethnicity and cultural background. The latest controversy has once again highlighted the challenges they may face while living, studying or working outside their home states.
