The Congress has reportedly reached out to the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) through lawyer and activist Prashant Bhushan, despite earlier allegations within political circles that the youth-led organisation was acting as a proxy for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The development could signal a shift in the Congresss approach towards CJP as opposition parties seek to strengthen their engagement with activists and youth groups campaigning on electoral issues.
According to a report by The Indian Express, the Congress asked Bhushan to contact CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke and invite him to a high tea hosted by Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. The gathering was intended to bring together INDIA bloc leaders, civil society representatives and student activists. The reported invitation suggests that the Congress may be open to engaging with CJP despite earlier reservations about its political affiliations.
CJP has gained attention through its online campaigns and protests on issues related to governance and electoral transparency. The organisation recently demonstrated at Delhis Jantar Mantar against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, raising concerns about the Election Commissions functioning and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The protest also included demands for the election chiefs resignation.
The demonstration led to a controversy after CJP members allegedly entered restricted premises at Jantar Mantar. CJP leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were subsequently sent to five days of judicial custody in connection with the case, according to media reports. The incident brought renewed attention to the organisation and its campaign, while prompting wider discussion about restrictions on protests and the role of youth-led political movements.
The Congresss reported outreach is particularly significant because some party leaders had previously questioned CJPs independence and alleged that it was linked to AAP. The BJP has also described the organisation as an AAP proxy. However, these claims remain political allegations and do not, by themselves, establish that CJP operates under the direction of another party.
Bhushans reported involvement could provide a channel for communication between the Congress and CJP at a time when opposition parties are attempting to build common ground on issues concerning electoral processes and democratic accountability. Nevertheless, the invitation does not necessarily mean that the Congress has abandoned its earlier concerns or that a formal political understanding has been reached.
The development highlights the challenges facing opposition parties as they attempt to coordinate with independent activist groups while managing their own political differences. For the Congress, engaging with CJP could create an opportunity to connect with younger voters and campaigners. For CJP, maintaining its independent identity may remain important as it considers whether to participate in broader opposition initiatives. Whether the reported contact leads to sustained cooperation remains uncertain. For now, the Congresss approach marks a notable development in its relationship with CJP amid continuing political debate over the organisations affiliations and its role in protests concerning electoral transparency.
