Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday stated that over the past decade, the Narendra Modi government has significantly improved Indias health infrastructure by adopting a comprehensive approach to the healthcare sector. Addressing a gathering after unveiling a statue of Maharaja Agrasen at Maharaja Agrasen Medical College in Agroha, Hisar, Shah highlighted the governments efforts to enhance medical infrastructure from primary to tertiary levels.
During the event, he also inaugurated a newly built ICU and laid the foundation stone for a postgraduate hostel. Shah emphasized various initiatives undertaken by the Modi government across different sectors. He pointed out that 250 million people have been lifted out of poverty during the governments tenure, and 40 million houses have been constructed for the underprivileged, providing shelter to 200 million people. Additionally, he noted that the Central government has been distributing free food grains to over 810 million beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana and ensuring household toilets under the Swachh Bharat Mission.
Referring to the situation before 2014, Shah stated that 120 million families lacked proper sanitation facilities, significantly impacting women. Highlighting improvements in healthcare, he noted that the health budget has grown substantially—from ₹37,000 crore in 2013-14 to ₹1.37 trillion in 2025-26. He further mentioned that when Narendra Modi assumed office, India had only seven AIIMS institutions, six of which were established under Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s leadership. Today, the number has risen to 23.
The number of medical colleges has nearly doubled from 387 to 766, while MBBS seats have increased from 51,000 to 115,000, with an additional 85,000 seats planned over the next five years. The event was attended by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, BJP state president Mohan Lal Badoli, Health Minister Arti Singh Rao, Minister Ranbir Singh Gangwa, Kurukshetra MP Naveen Jindal, Independent MLA Savitri Jindal, former Rajya Sabha MP D.P. Vats, and other dignitaries.
