Bollywood actor Aamir Khan has dismissed the long-held belief that his iconic character in 3 Idiots was inspired by education reformer and innovator Sonam Wangchuk, calling it one of the biggest misconceptions surrounding the 2009 blockbuster. Addressing the issue during a recent public interaction, Aamir responded to remarks made by his co-star Omi Vaidya, who portrayed Chatur Ramalingam in the film. Referring to Vaidyas comments, Aamir said, Chatur is incorrect, and clarified that neither he nor director Rajkumar Hirani and writer Abhijat Joshi knew Sonam Wangchuk while 3 Idiots was being written and filmed.
The clarification comes after years of speculation that the films central character, Phunsukh Wangdu—popularly known as Rancho—was directly modeled on Wangchuk, whose work in education and innovation has earned widespread recognition. Aamir stressed that the admiration people have for Sonam Wangchuk should not depend on any perceived connection with the film. According to the actor, Wangchuks achievements stand on their own and deserve appreciation regardless of whether a Bollywood character was inspired by him.
The actor also expressed concern over Wangchuks ongoing hunger strike, saying he hopes the activist remains safe and that the situation is resolved soon. However, Aamir refrained from commenting on the political aspects of the protest. The debate over 3 Idiots has continued for more than a decade because of the similarities between the fictional characters passion for education and Wangchuks real-life work in transforming learning in Ladakh. Over the years, Wangchuk himself has also distanced himself from being labeled the real-life Rancho, saying he was never directly involved in the making of the film and does not consider himself to be Phunsukh Wangdu.
Released in 2009, 3 Idiots remains one of Indian cinemas most celebrated films. Directed by Rajkumar Hirani and loosely adapted from Chetan Bhagats novel Five Point Someone, the movie continues to influence conversations around Indias education system and academic pressure. With Aamir Khans latest statement, one of Bollywoods most enduring myths has been addressed directly. While the actor has denied any direct inspiration from Sonam Wangchuk, he made it clear that his respect for the innovator and educationist remains unchanged.
