The 18th edition of the India-Nepal joint military exercise 'Surya Kiran' officially commenced on December 31, 2024, at Saljhandi, Nepal, and will continue until January 13, 2025. This collaborative training initiative brings together approximately 700 personnel, with each side contributing an infantry battalion from their respective armies. It underscores the deep-rooted defence partnership and commitment to regional security between the two nations. The exercise is designed to enhance interoperability between the Indian and Nepali armies, with a strong emphasis on sharing expertise in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations. Other focus areas include conducting humanitarian assistance and disaster relief drills, which are critical for managing natural calamities in the region. This two-week program aims to improve operational coordination, build trust, and facilitate the exchange of tactical knowledge.
The opening ceremony featured an impressive parade, with contingents from both countries marching in unison to a medley of military tunes from India and Nepal. Major General Prem Bahadur Gurung, Commander of the Mid-West Division of the Nepali Army, highlighted the significance of such joint efforts in fostering deeper ties and mutual understanding. He stressed the importance of learning from each other's operational experiences to strengthen the strategic partnership.
Exercise 'Surya Kiran' has been an annual event since its inception in 2011, with host responsibilities alternated between the two countries. Over the years, it has evolved into a key platform for promoting bilateral military cooperation, addressing regional security challenges, and reinforcing the shared commitment to peace and stability in the region.
