Patna, June 20 (AHN) Politics in Bihar has intensified over the Bharat Tiwari encounter case in Bhojpur, with the opposition mounting fresh attacks on the state government even as a judicial inquiry has been ordered into the incident.
Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav questioned the functioning of the state government and urged Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary to visit the family of Bharat Tiwari and apologise.
Tejashwi alleged that the Bihar government has failed to curb crime in the state. He claimed that innocent people are being targeted while criminals continue to operate freely.
He further accused the police machinery of being preoccupied with enforcing prohibition laws and alleged that corruption and illegal liquor trade have weakened public confidence in law enforcement.
According to Tejashwi, the opposition had consistently maintained that the encounter required an impartial investigation.
The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader stated that, in his view, the incident appeared to be a fake encounter. He argued that the circumstances of the case, including the viral videos and allegations by family members, had raised serious questions about the police's version of events.
Tejashwi said that Samrat Choudhary, who currently handles key responsibilities in the government, should address the concerns raised by the victim’s family.
He also questioned the police decision to file an FIR against members of Bharat Bhushan Tiwari’s family and asked the government to explain the basis for such action.
The Bihar government has already announced a judicial inquiry into the encounter. A retired High Court judge is expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, examine the evidence, and determine whether proper procedures were followed during the police operation.
The judicial probe was ordered amid growing political pressure, public debate, and demands for an impartial investigation.
Tejashwi also referred to the suspicious death of Prince Yadav, brother of prominent educator Roshan Anand. He stated that he had already raised the issue before the Chief Minister and reiterated his demand for a CBI investigation.
According to him, an independent probe is necessary to establish the truth and ensure that those found responsible are held accountable.
The Bharat Tiwari encounter has become a major political issue in Bihar, with opposition parties alleging police excesses and the ruling alliance itself raising questions about the incident.
While the police maintain that Bharat Tiwari opened fire during an operation, family members and several political leaders have alleged that he had surrendered before the shooting.
The findings of the judicial inquiry are now expected to play a crucial role in determining the facts of the encounter and addressing the competing claims of both sides.
