Self-enumeration for Census 2027 starts in Bengal today, to continue for 15 days

Kolkata, Aug 1 (AHN) The self-enumeration for Census 2027 will begin in West Bengal from Saturday and will continue for the next 15 days till August 15.

Citizens of Bengal would be able to complete the process of self-enumeration simply by logging into the dedicated website of https:/se.census.gov.in and complete the self-enumeration process there after filling up the mandatory columns on information sought from them.

On successfully filling up the information columns and submission of the self-enumeration form, the said website will generate a self-enumeration ID on this count for submitting the form concerned.

Thereafter, the individual completing the self-enumeration process will have to retain the 11-digit self-enumeration ID and will have to subsequently share that 11-digit ID with enumerators visiting the house of the individual for verification.

The self-enumeration process, as claimed in the website, ensures better accuracy, since the individual concerned will be entering his or her own information.

However, at the time of filling of the self-enumeration form, the individuals will not have to upload and submit the supporting documents.

“Those documents will also not be required to be provided when enumerators visit households of these individuals later,” confirmed the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) commissioner, Smita Pandey, who is also the principal census officer for the entire area coming under the KMC's jurisdiction.

According to West Bengal Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari the Census 2027 exercise is starting late in West Bengal essentially due to the lackadaisical approach of the previous Mamata Banerjee-led Cabinet.

“The Union Government sent a communique to the previous state government in February last year to begin the process. But the previous state Cabinet did not act on that communique.

"The previous state government did not even bother to reply to the communique from the Union government. The previous state government did not start the work because of narrow political reasons. The previous Chief Secretary was waiting for a political consensus in the matter. Since the previous government did not do anything in the matter, the West Bengal government is lagging behind other states on this count,” Adhikari told media persons after an emergency meeting on this issue at the state secretariat of Nabanna on Friday.

He also said that the census operations this time will be conducted digitally, where the census officials will collect data on their mobile phones for which a separate app will be launched.

The collected data will be uploaded at the central server through that app.
