New Delhi, Sep 6 (AHN) President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday expressed deep sadness over the tragic building collapse in Delhi and offered her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.
In a post shared on social media, the President said, “I am deeply saddened by the accident of a building collapse in Delhi. My heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones in this tragedy. I pray for the swift recovery of the injured.”
The five-storey building, being used as a paying guest accommodation for students known as Hostel Daze, collapsed on Sunday in the congested Satya Niketan area near Delhi University’s South Campus. The structure, estimated to be 40 to 50 years old, came down while repair and excavation work was underway in its basement.
Several students were trapped under the debris. Rescue operations involving the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Fire Service, police and other agencies began immediately. Multiple people have been pulled out and rushed to hospitals, including AIIMS Trauma Centre.
Authorities confirmed that some lives were lost while several others sustained injuries, with a few remaining in critical condition. Search and rescue efforts continued late into the evening as teams worked to locate anyone still trapped.
The incident has left the local student community and residents in shock. Eyewitnesses described hearing a loud rumble before the building crumbled, with some comparing the sensation to a mild earthquake.
Concerns have been raised about the structural safety of older buildings converted into hostels in the densely populated locality.
Senior political leaders and officials visited the site and hospitals to oversee the ongoing operations and meet the injured.
An investigation has been ordered to determine the exact cause of the collapse, with preliminary focus on the basement renovation work and the overall condition of the structure.
An FIR has also been registered in connection with the incident.
President Murmu’s message of solidarity comes at a time when families of the victims are grappling with sudden loss and uncertainty. Her prayers for the injured reflect the nation’s collective hope for their speedy recovery as rescue and medical teams continue their efforts.
