Met office forecasts heavy rain in south Bengal over weekend

Kolkata, Aug 26 (AHN) Due to the possibility of another low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal, a yellow warning of heavy rain is in place in south Bengal over the weekend. The Met office on Wednesday said that heavy rain is likely in West Burdwan, Birbhum districts on Friday and in Hooghly, South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas and East Midnapore districts on Saturday.
There is a heavy rain warning in the coastal areas and western regions on Sunday. Scattered rain may occur in these places on Thursday. However, even if it rains, the uncomfortable heat will not subside due to high humidity level in the air. Although there is no possibility of heavy rain in Kolkata, light to moderate rain may occur over the weekend. However, scattered rain is forecast in various places including the city today and tomorrow.
In North Bengal, heavy rain is also forecast in the five upper districts i.e. Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar. In rest of the districts in north Bengal, scattered light to moderate rain will continue.
"A low pressure area is likely to form over the northwest Bay of Bengal. There is also a cyclonic circulation which is located 7.6 km above sea level. The low pressure area extends from Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh to West Bengal. A large amount of moisture is entering Bengal from the Bay of Bengal. Due to this, continuous rain will occur," said a Met Department official.
Meanwhile, the maximum temperature in Kolkata and its surrounding areas on Tuesday was 32 degrees Celsius which is 00.07 degrees Celsius below normal. The minimum temperature was 27.02 degrees Celsius which is 00.06 degrees above normal. The relative humidity was 96 per cent and 76 per cent, respectively.
Today, Wednesday, the sky will be cloudy with light to moderate rain with thundershowers in several districts including Kolkata. The maximum and minimum temperatures will hover around 31 and 27 degrees Celsius respectively.
