K'taka govt forms cabinet sub-committee to address student issues, suggest education reforms

Bengaluru, Aug 27 (AHN) The Karnataka government on Thursday decided to set up a Cabinet sub-committee to listen to students’ concerns and recommend necessary reforms in the state’s education system. 

Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has constituted the “Cabinet Sub-Committee on Student Issues and Education Reforms” under the leadership of Health and Family Welfare, Minority Welfare and Haj & Waqf Minister U.T. Khader. The Cabinet Sub-Committee members are directed to give a report on the challenges faced by 'students' and 'education reforms'.

The move comes in response to the “Chhatron Ki Goonj” student movement being led by Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi with the objective of bringing comprehensive changes to the education system. The state government intends to understand the concerns and aspirations of students and introduce appropriate reforms.

The Cabinet sub-committee headed by Minister U.T. Khader will include School Education and Literacy Minister Madhu Bangarappa, along with Minister for Higher Education Basavaraj Rayareddy, Minister for Home, IT and BT, E-Governance Priyank Kharge and Minister for Medical Education and Skill Development Sharan Prakash Patil as members.

The Chief Minister has directed the committee to interact with students, listen to their problems, aspirations and views, and recommend education reforms aimed at addressing the challenges faced by students and young people.

School Education and Literacy Minister Madhu Bangarappa said the future of the state rests with its youth and that the government is committed to providing them with quality education, necessary infrastructure and adequate opportunities.

He said the government intends to understand the problems and sentiments of students and young people and respond to their aspirations.

Suggestions and feedback from students, youth and the general public will be welcomed, Bangarappa said, urging everyone to work together to create a better future for the younger generation.

The committee will examine and make recommendations on the integrity of examination and recruitment; cost of education, fee and coaching regulation; Infrastructure and quality in public institutions; curriculum, skilling and linkage to employment; student mental health and wellbeing; access and equity.

The committee has been directed to submit the report within one month.
