Raipur/Bacheli (Chhattisgarh), Sep 10 (AHN) A Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) Head Constable died after sustaining serious injuries from an "accidental gunshot" while cleaning his service weapon at a camp in Chhattisgarh's Bacheli, police officials said on Thursday.
According to the officials, the incident occurred on Wednesday.
Head Constable Dattatraya, son of Shivaji B Wangne and a resident of Maharashtra's Ahilyanagar, was cleaning an AK-47 rifle inside his porta cabin at the CISF Camp Bacheli when two rounds were suddenly discharged from it, causing serious injuries to the jawan.
He was immediately rushed to Apollo Hospital in Bacheli, where doctors examined him and declared him dead.
The body was kept in the mortuary of Apollo Hospital, NMDC Bacheli, before being sent to the District Hospital in Dantewada for necessary legal formalities and post-mortem examination.
The deceased’s family members have arrived in Bacheli following the tragedy.
Police Station Bacheli has taken cognisance of the matter and is conducting the required legal proceedings and investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
Police officials said that the exact cause of the accidental firing will be determined only after a thorough probe. This includes a detailed investigation by the police, Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) examination of the scene and the weapon, and the findings of the post-mortem report.
The incident has cast a sombre mood over the CISF camp.
Security forces personnel often handle weapons as part of their routine duties, and strict protocols are in place for cleaning and maintenance of firearms. The sudden discharge of rounds during cleaning has raised questions that investigators are now examining closely.
Police have assured that all aspects of the case are being looked into carefully to establish the sequence of events leading to the fatal injuries. Further details are expected once the forensic and medical reports are received.
The police officials also said that the CISF and local administration are providing necessary support to the family of the deceased during this difficult time.
