Lucknow, Jan 17 (AHN) A Special CBI Court in Lucknow sentenced four convicts, including an official of New India Assurance, to imprisonment of varying terms ranging from three to two years in connection with a Rs 9.81 lakh fake insurance claim, an official said on Saturday.
The Special Court sentenced N.K. Singhal, the then Administrative Officer (Development), New India Assurance Company, Divisional Office-III, Kanpur, to imprisonment for three years with a fine of Rs 2.3 lakh on Friday, the official said in a statement.
Sanjay Kumar Jain and Neeraj Kapoor have been sentenced to imprisonment for three years with a fine of Rs 95,000 each, while convict Brijesh Kanodia was sentenced to imprisonment for two years with a fine of Rs 25,000.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered the case on January 30, 2004. It was alleged that Singhal, while posted and functioning as Administrative Officer (Development), New India Assurance Co Ltd, Divisional Office-III, Kanpur, during 1999 to 2002, entered into a criminal conspiracy with some unknown persons with the common object of committing offences of cheating, forgery and criminal misconduct, and defrauded New India Assurance to the tune of Rs 9.81 lakh through fake insurance claims.
After completion of the investigation, the CBI filed a chargesheet on November 30, 2005 against Singhal, Neeraj Agarwal, Sanjay Kumar Jain, Pradeep Kumar Dixit, Neeraj Kapoor, Amar Nath Shukla and Brijesh Kanodia. Singhal is also facing prosecution for offences punishable under the Information Technology Act, 2000.
Accused Pradeep Kumar Dixit was acquitted of all the charges levelled against him by the court.
Due to the death of accused Neeraj Agarwal, Assistant Manager, NIAC, DO-3, Kanpur, and Amar Nath Shukla during the trial, proceedings against them were abated.
The CBI probe in the matter lasted almost two decades and involved inspections of the key documents of the insurance company along with recording of statements of the co-workers of the convicted employees of New India Assurance.
