Biplab Deb appointed BJP National General Secretary; two other NE leaders get key posts

New Delhi, Aug 17 (AHN) Three BJP leaders from the Northeastern region, including former Tripura Chief Minister and sitting Lok Sabha member Biplab Kumar Deb, have been appointed to key organisational posts in BJP National President Nitin Nabin’s new team of office‑bearers announced on Monday.
Deb, a former Tripura BJP president, has been appointed National General Secretary. Phangnon Konyak from Nagaland and Mriganka Deo Barman from Assam have been appointed National Secretaries.
Deb, Konyak and Deo Barman, in separate social media posts, thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, National President Nitin Nabin and other central BJP leaders for entrusting them with new responsibilities.
Phangnon Konyak is a Rajya Sabha member from Nagaland, while Deo Barman currently serves as Vice President of the Assam Olympic Association.
Deo Barman has held several organisational positions in the BJP Assam unit, including General Secretary, and earlier served as State President of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), Assam Pradesh.
Senior BJP leaders, including Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton and Assam BJP President Dilip Saikia, congratulated the new national team, especially the Northeastern leaders.
Patton, also BJP Legislature Party leader in Nagaland, wrote on social media: “Wishing her every success as she takes on this new responsibility. May her experience, dedication and commitment contribute greatly to the party and to the service of the people.”
Congratulating Deb, Tripura Chief Minister Saha posted: “Heartiest congratulations to Shri Biplab Kumar Deb Ji on being appointed as the National General Secretary of BJP. Your extensive administrative experience and grassroots leadership will significantly strengthen the party organisation nationwide.”
Deb, 55, before being elected to the Lok Sabha from West Tripura in the 2024 Parliamentary elections, had served as a Rajya Sabha member representing Tripura from September 2022 until June 2024.
He was the 10th Chief Minister of Tripura from March 9, 2018, to May 14, 2022. Under his leadership, the BJP registered a historic victory in Tripura in 2018, ending the CPI‑M’s 25‑year rule. He resigned as Chief Minister in May 2022 and was succeeded by incumbent Chief Minister Manik Saha.
