Assam Police arrest two peddlers, seize heroin in Cachar

Guwahati, July 27 (AHN) The anti-narcotics drive continued to yield results on Monday as the Assam Police in Katigorah locality in Cachar district seized 126 grams of heroin and arrested two alleged drug peddlers during a special operation along National Highway-6, officials said.

The operation was carried out at Katigorah Chowrangi based on specific intelligence inputs received by the police. During the search, the police recovered 126 grams of suspected heroin concealed in 10 soap cases, two mobile phones and a Swift car bearing registration number AS-07-Q-9101, which was allegedly being used for transporting the contraband.

The two arrested accused have been identified as Baharul Islam, a resident of Tezpur, and Aminul Hussain from Sonitpur district. Both were taken into custody and are being interrogated to ascertain the source and intended destination of the seized narcotics, officials said.

The operation was led by Katigorah Police Station Officer-in-Charge Naba Kumar Saikia along with a police team. Police said a case has been registered under the relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and further investigation is underway to identify other members of the alleged drug trafficking network.

Officials said the latest seizure is part of the Assam Police’s sustained campaign against the illegal drug trade, which has witnessed intensified enforcement measures across the state in recent years.

According to police, this is the third major anti-drug operation conducted by local police in the last 15 days, reflecting the force’s continued focus on dismantling narcotics supply chains operating through the region.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has repeatedly directed the state police to maintain a zero-tolerance approach against narcotics, with law enforcement agencies carrying out regular raids and seizures across several districts.

Police officials reiterated that the crackdown on drug trafficking would continue with sustained intelligence-based operations aimed at curbing the menace and bringing those involved in the illegal trade to justice.
