The Ministry of Home Affairs has informed state governments that no district in India is now classified as Naxal violence-affected, marking a major milestone after decades of Left Wing Extremism (LWE). Following a recent high-level security review under the 2015 action plan against LWE, officials confirmed that all districts have been removed from the affected category after assessing factors such as armed presence, violence levels, and operational capability of Maoist groups. The Ministry stated that this achievement is the result of coordinated efforts between the Centre and states. Earlier, only a few districts in Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand were still listed as affected. Instead, 37 districts have now been placed under “Legacy and Thrust” and one under “District of Concern,” meaning they require continued monitoring and development focus despite the absence of active insurgency. The Naxalite movement, which began in 1967 in Naxalbari, has been one of India’s longest-running internal security challenges, and officials say its dismantling marks a significant step in restoring peace in affected regions.
