BJP MP Nishikant Dubey on Wednesday warned that Meta could lose its safe harbour protection under the Information Technology Act if CEO Mark Zuckerberg does not apologise within three days for the temporary removal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's video from Facebook. Dubey said the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology, which he chairs, has sought an unconditional apology after the video remained unavailable for around five to six hours. The committee has also cautioned that failure to apologise could lead to the withdrawal of Meta's intermediary immunity under Section 79 of the IT Act. He added that if the legal protection is revoked, Meta could face direct legal action, including FIRs, over unlawful content hosted on its platforms. The video, released on July 23, featured PM Modi addressing students on the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak protests and was later restored by Meta.
