Yogi Adityanath Remembers Govind Ballabh Pant on His 139th Birth Anniversary

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday paid tribute to Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant, the state’s first Chief Minister and a prominent freedom fighter, on his 139th birth anniversary. The Chief Minister remembered Pant’s contribution to India’s independence movement, governance, social reforms and nation-building. Addressing a commemorative programme, Adityanath described Pant as a distinguished lawyer and freedom fighter who made significant contributions during India’s struggle against British rule. He offered his respects on behalf of the Uttar Pradesh government and the people of the state.

Recalling Pant’s involvement in the Kakori case, Adityanath said the veteran leader had defended revolutionaries who were prosecuted by the British following the 1925 Kakori Train Action. Pant remained actively involved in the freedom movement and, despite becoming the Premier of Uttar Pradesh in 1937, later stepped away from the position to participate in the campaign against British rule.

The Chief Minister also highlighted Pant’s participation in major movements, including the Quit India Movement, saying he continued to play an active role in the fight for independence. After India gained freedom, Pant became Uttar Pradesh’s first Chief Minister in 1947. At the time, the state also included the territory that is now Uttarakhand. Adityanath said Pant worked to establish effective administration across the vast state while focusing on economic development and the welfare of different sections of society.

Adityanath particularly pointed to Pant’s contribution to land reforms, describing the initiatives undertaken during his tenure as an important example of progressive governance. Pant later served as India’s Union Home Minister from 1954. According to Adityanath, he played a significant role in dealing with linguistic tensions and contributed to the process through which Hindi was recognised as the country’s official language. Paying his final tribute, Adityanath said Pant’s legacy continues to remain relevant, particularly for his role in the freedom struggle, public administration and social transformation.
