Who Is Shakti Sharma? First Woman Non-Medical Officer to Become Air Vice Marshal

Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma has made history in the Indian Air Force by becoming the first woman officer from the non-medical stream in India’s Defence Services to attain the rank of Air Vice Marshal or equivalent. Sharma assumed charge as Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Education) at Air Headquarters on September 1, marking a major milestone in the growing participation of women in senior positions within the Indian armed forces.

Commissioned into the Education Branch of the Indian Air Force on June 18, 1994, Sharma has completed more than three decades of service. During her career, she has held several appointments at training establishments, field stations, command headquarters and Air Headquarters, gaining experience across different aspects of military education and administration.

Her career has also included important contributions to strengthening the relationship between the armed forces and academic institutions. Sharma played a role in establishing IAF Chairs of Excellence at IIT Kanpur and Pune University, initiatives aimed at promoting greater interaction between military institutions and academia. Before reaching the Air Vice Marshal rank, Sharma had already achieved another distinction in the field of military education. She became the first woman officer from the Tri-Services to command a Sainik School when she served as Principal of Sainik School Kapurthala.

Her latest promotion is significant because women officers had previously reached senior two-star ranks primarily through the medical services. Sharma's elevation represents a breakthrough for women serving in non-medical branches of India's Defence Services and reflects the expanding opportunities for women to take on senior leadership responsibilities.

As Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Education), Sharma will now oversee responsibilities connected with education within the Indian Air Force. Her appointment also comes at a time when military education and professional training are becoming increasingly important as armed forces adapt to rapidly changing technology, modern warfare and evolving strategic requirements.

Sharma's journey from being commissioned into the IAF Education Branch in 1994 to reaching the Air Vice Marshal rank more than 30 years later highlights the changing landscape of women's careers in India's military.
