US Postmaster General Louis DeJoy Resigns, Deputy Assumes Role

Louis DeJoy, the US Postmaster General, has stepped down, expediting his previously announced departure as the Postal Service works to curb financial losses and modernize operations. His resignation marks a significant shift in leadership at a time when the agency is grappling with ongoing challenges. In a statement, DeJoy confirmed that Monday would be his final day, having informed the Postal Service’s board of governors. Deputy Postmaster General Doug Tulino will assume leadership on an interim basis until a permanent successor is appointed.
DeJoy’s sudden exit intensifies the uncertainty surrounding the USPS, which has faced mixed results under his cost-cutting and efficiency-focused reforms. His tenure included efforts to reduce expenditures and reverse mounting losses, but progress has been inconsistent. Amid these challenges, former President Donald Trump has recently floated the idea of privatizing the Postal Service or merging it with the Department of Commerce. Tech billionaire Elon Musk has also expressed support for privatization.
Earlier this month, DeJoy disclosed that he had entered into an agreement with Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to introduce operational reforms. Under this initiative, at least two DOGE representatives were assigned to work under DeJoy’s supervision, focusing on streamlining postal operations. Although DeJoy had previously asked the board to begin the search for his successor, he had not specified a departure date. His abrupt resignation accelerates the leadership transition, leaving USPS at a critical juncture as it navigates financial and structural challenges.
