Union Minister Kiren Rijiju Departs for Qatar to Convey India's Condolences Over Former Emir's Demise

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju departed from New Delhi for Qatar to represent India at the official condolence ceremonies following the passing of the country's former Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. Sheikh Hamad, revered as the "Father Emir" of Qatar, died on Sunday at the age of 74. While Qatari authorities confirmed his death, no official cause was disclosed.

Widely regarded as the architect of modern Qatar, Sheikh Hamad transformed the resource-rich Gulf nation into one of the world's most prosperous and globally influential countries. Under his leadership, Qatar emerged as a major economic force, strengthened its diplomatic presence, and expanded its influence through energy and media.

In recognition of his contributions, India observed a one-day national mourning on Monday, July 13. As a mark of respect, the National Flag was flown at half-mast across the country, including at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Parliament House, Samvidhan Sadan (Old Parliament Building), South Block, and North Block. The Ministry of External Affairs had announced the observance on Sunday, directing that the Tricolour be flown at half-mast nationwide while official entertainment programmes remained suspended for the day.

The Indian national flag was also lowered at the Embassy of Qatar in New Delhi, symbolizing the close friendship and enduring diplomatic ties between the two nations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Sheikh Hamad, describing him as a visionary leader whose leadership helped transform Qatar into one of the world's wealthiest nations while also strengthening relations with India.

In a message shared on X, the Prime Minister said he was deeply saddened by the passing of the Father Emir and recalled meeting him during his visit to Qatar in February 2024. He extended heartfelt condolences to the current Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the royal family, and the people of Qatar, praying for the departed leader's eternal peace. Sheikh Hamad assumed power in 1995 and led Qatar for nearly two decades. His tenure is remembered as a defining period in the country's history, during which sweeping economic reforms and strategic investments reshaped Qatar's future.

His government invested heavily in the development of the country's vast liquefied natural gas (LNG) reserves, helping Qatar become one of the world's leading LNG exporters. At the same time, extensive infrastructure projects and modernization initiatives transformed Doha into a globally recognized city and strengthened Qatar's position in international affairs. In 2013, Sheikh Hamad voluntarily transferred power to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, stating that it was time for a new generation to lead the country into its next phase of development.
