AIMIM candidate Mirza Riyaz Ul Hassan Effendi emerged victorious in the Telangana Legislative Council election for the Hyderabad Local Authorities' constituency, defeating BJP's N Goutham Rao. The election was held on April 23, with AIMIM and BJP as the only contenders, as both the ruling Congress and opposition BRS chose not to field candidates.

According to officials, of the 88 votes cast, Effendi secured 63, while Rao received 25. A total of 112 individuals were eligible to vote, including 81 GHMC corporators and 31 ex-officio members such as MLAs, MPs, and MLCs. The contest stirred political tensions, with BJP accusing Congress and BRS of aiding AIMIM—whom they labeled "communal"—by opting out. Some banners appeared in Hyderabad urging GHMC corporators to vote against AIMIM, accusing the party of disrespecting Hindus.

BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao explained his party’s decision to abstain, citing a lack of numbers to win and a refusal to support either BJP or AIMIM. BRS also issued a whip instructing its members to stay away from the vote. Responding to BJP’s criticism of Congress, ruling party MLC Venkat Balmoor said the BJP contested despite having little chance of victory and accused them of using religion to create political controversy.
