Tel Aviv-to-Vienna Flight Diverted to Bulgaria Following Unspecified Security Threat

An Austrian Airlines flight travelling from Tel Aviv to Vienna made an emergency landing in Sofia, Bulgaria, on October 18 after a reported security threat prompted authorities to divert the aircraft. The flight, identified as OS82, was carrying 51 passengers and six crew members aboard an Airbus A320. Bulgarian authorities responded to the alert by deploying a MiG-29 fighter jet to escort the aircraft to Sofia Airport.
According to reports, the threat was received as the plane approached the Romanian border. The crew diverted the aircraft in line with safety procedures, allowing authorities to assess the situation on the ground. Following the landing, security personnel carried out checks on the aircraft, passengers and crew. Austrian Airlines later confirmed that the searches had found no danger.
Passengers were subsequently able to reboard the aircraft, and the flight continued to Vienna. The incident prompted a coordinated response involving Bulgarian aviation and security authorities. The deployment of a military aircraft formed part of the measures taken to ensure the passenger plane could land safely while the reported threat was assessed.
Authorities have not publicly confirmed the source of the threat or identified anyone responsible. Further details about the circumstances surrounding the alert were not immediately available. The incident highlights the security procedures followed by airlines and aviation authorities when a potential threat is reported during a flight. Such warnings can lead to diversions, military escorts and ground inspections, even when subsequent searches reveal no immediate danger.
