Tamil Nadu CM Vijay's London Visit to Silverstone Draws Opposition Fire, Questions Raised Over Purpose

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s visit to London’s Silverstone Motor Racing Circuit has triggered a political controversy, with opposition parties questioning the objective of the trip and seeking greater transparency over its outcomes. Vijay travelled to London on September 10 for a week-long visit aimed at attracting investments to Tamil Nadu. He is accompanied by Cabinet colleague Aadhav Arjuna and senior government officials and is scheduled to return to the state on September 17.

During his visit to Silverstone, Vijay toured the Race Control and circuit facilities and sought information about the technology, safety measures and operational systems used for international endurance racing events. He also met actor and professional racing driver Ajith Kumar and flagged off the 2026 Michelin Le Mans Cup race.

The Silverstone visit comes against the backdrop of the Tamil Nadu government’s plan to establish a Motor Sports City in the state. According to a government official, the visit was intended to give Vijay a closer understanding of the infrastructure, technology, management systems and sporting requirements involved in hosting major international motor racing events. The government also sees the initiative as a way to create greater opportunities for Indian motorsport talent on international platforms.

The visit has drawn criticism from several opposition parties, including the AIADMK, CPI(M), DMK and BJP. AIADMK general secretary and former Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami questioned the lack of publicly announced investment deals from Vijay’s London trip. He said the visit had been presented as an effort to bring new investments to Tamil Nadu, but so far there had been no clear information about investment commitments or photographs from meetings with prospective investors.

CPI(M) state secretary P Shanmugam also sought greater accountability, calling for a white paper on investments brought into Tamil Nadu since the TVK government came to power on May 10. He alleged that there was insufficient transparency surrounding the government’s investment claims and also urged the administration to focus on protecting small and micro industries within the state.

DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan similarly questioned the purpose of the overseas visit. He said Vijay had stated that the main objective was to attract investments, but the images that emerged publicly were largely connected to his visit to the motor racing event involving his friend Ajith Kumar. The BJP also raised questions about the trip. State president Nainar Nagenthran sought details of the total expenditure incurred during the visit, along with information on all those accompanying the Chief Minister.

The Chief Minister’s visit, however, received support from MDMK MP Durai Vaiko. He said Vijay’s London trip was focused on attracting investments, generating employment and holding discussions with senior representatives of major companies. Vaiko also defended the Silverstone visit, saying it could contribute to Tamil Nadu’s plans to strengthen its motorsport infrastructure. He added that details and photographs of Vijay’s meetings with business and industry leaders would be made public. The controversy is likely to continue until the Tamil Nadu government releases a clearer account of the investment discussions and outcomes from Vijay’s first overseas trip as Chief Minister.
