Pakistan’s worsening security situation was once again exposed after a deadly suicide bombing in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa killed at least eight people, including two police personnel, and injured 35 others.

The blast took place at the busy Phattak Chowk in Naurang Bazaar of Lakki Marwat district, where a suicide bomber detonated an explosive-laden auto rickshaw in a crowded market area during peak activity hours.

According to police officials, two traffic police officers and a woman were among those killed in the powerful explosion. Several injured victims were rushed to Tehsil Headquarters Hospital in Sarai Naurang, with authorities warning that the death toll could rise because many of the wounded remain in critical condition.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and devastation as the blast tore through shops and vehicles, sending debris across the marketplace. Rescue teams and security personnel quickly sealed off the area while investigators collected evidence from the attack site.

The bombing has once again highlighted Pakistan’s growing struggle to contain militant violence, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which has witnessed a sharp increase in terror attacks over the past two years. The province has repeatedly become a target of extremist groups operating near the Afghan border.

Critics argue that despite repeated claims by Pakistani authorities about improved counterterror operations, militant networks continue to strike crowded civilian areas and security installations with alarming frequency. The attack has renewed concerns over intelligence failures and weak preventive security measures in vulnerable districts.

Lakki Marwat has experienced multiple militant incidents in recent years, with police stations, checkpoints and public areas frequently targeted by extremists. Security experts warn that insurgent groups appear to be regrouping in parts of northwest Pakistan following instability in neighbouring Afghanistan.

The latest suicide bombing is likely to intensify pressure on Islamabad, which is already facing criticism over deteriorating law and order, political instability and economic turmoil. Observers say repeated attacks are damaging public confidence in the government’s ability to ensure basic security.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, though suspicion is likely to fall on Pakistan-based extremist factions active in the region. Authorities have launched an investigation into the bombing.
