Russian Drone Strikes Kill Five Across Ukraine, Market Outside Kyiv Hit

At least five people were killed in a series of Russian drone and aerial attacks across Ukraine, Ukrainian officials said, with two people killed after a strike hit a market in Sofiiska Borshchahivka, an area just outside Kyiv. The attack on the market sparked a fire and damaged vehicles and nearby structures. Ukrainian prosecutors said around 10 people were also injured in the incident as emergency crews worked to clear the affected area.

Kyiv was also targeted during the latest wave of attacks. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said nine people were injured in strikes across the capital, including a child. Several districts reported fires and damage following drone strikes and falling debris. Other parts of Ukraine also reported casualties. In the Sumy region, three glide bombs struck near a family support centre, killing two people, according to regional authorities. In Kharkiv, prosecutors said a drone hit a vehicle, killing its driver.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia had launched hundreds of attack drones since Saturday, including a large number of jet-powered drones. The scale of the assault once again highlighted the growing role of unmanned aircraft in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. The attacks also caused damage to civilian and communications infrastructure. Kyiv authorities reported incidents near a kindergarten and playground, while telecom operator Kyivstar said its headquarters had been damaged. The company said there were no casualties at the facility.

Russia's Defence Ministry said its forces had targeted military-related infrastructure, including data centres in Kyiv and a logistics facility in Odesa. Moscow has repeatedly denied deliberately targeting civilians, while Ukrainian officials have accused Russia of carrying out attacks that endanger civilian populations. The latest strikes come as diplomatic efforts surrounding the Russia-Ukraine war continue, while communities across Ukraine remain under the threat of repeated missile and drone attacks.
