Retired Havildar Held Over Alleged Theft of Assault Rifles, Pistols From Telangana Cantonment

A retired Indian Army havildar has been arrested in connection with the alleged theft of assault rifles, pistols and ammunition from a military facility in Telangana, police said. The accused has been identified as Upputholla Malleshi, also known as Raju or Mallesh. He is a former personnel of the Madras Regiment, according to investigators.

Police and military intelligence teams launched an investigation after weapons were reported missing from the cantonment area. During the probe, the authorities allegedly traced the weapons and arrested the former Army personnel. Investigators reportedly recovered several firearms, including AK-203 rifles, an INSAS rifle and pistols, along with magazines and ammunition. A night-vision device was also among the items reportedly recovered.

The weapons were allegedly taken from a facility associated with the 20th Battalion, Madras Regiment, in the Telangana cantonment area. Investigators are examining how the weapons were removed from military custody and whether the accused had assistance from anyone else. His previous familiarity with military facilities is also being examined as part of the investigation. Authorities are also looking into the circumstances surrounding the alleged theft, including the security arrangements at the facility and the movement of the weapons after they were taken.

The recovery of the firearms is considered a significant development in the investigation. Police are continuing their probe to establish the complete sequence of events and determine whether other people were involved. The accused will face further legal proceedings as the investigation continues. The allegations against him remain subject to due process and judicial determination.
