President Droupadi Murmu on friday presented the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar at Rashtrapati Bhavan on the occasion of Veer Bal Diwas. Archana Sivaramakrishnan accepted the award on behalf of her late daughter, Vyoma Priya, sharing how the 8-year-old had courageously tried to save a 6-year-old boy from an electrified slide in their apartment park, losing her life in the process.

Speaking to ANI, Archana said, “I am receiving the bravery award on behalf of our daughter, Vyoma Priya. She was 8 years old when she was playing in our apartment park. A slide there was electrified due to a damaged underground cable. When a 6-year-old boy fell, Vyoma tried to rescue him but was caught in the current herself. It is a bittersweet moment for us to receive this award… We wish she could have been here to receive it herself.”

Another Bal Puraskar recipient shared, “When Operation Sindoor began against Pakistan, soldiers came to our village. I felt I should help them by providing milk, tea, buttermilk, and ice daily. Being recognized with this award is an incredible feeling—I had never imagined it.” The government observes Veer Bal Diwas on December 26, as announced by the Prime Minister on the occasion of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s Prakash Purab on January 9, 2022. The day commemorates the martyrdom of Sahibzadas Baba Zorawar Singh Ji and Baba Fateh Singh Ji, whose sacrifice continues to inspire generations.

This year, the Prime Minister will participate in the national programme at Bharat Mandapam at around 12:15 PM and address the gathering, according to a press release from the Prime Minister's Office. Across India, the government is organizing participatory events to educate citizens about the courage and sacrifice of the Sahibzadas and other young heroes of India’s history. Activities include storytelling sessions, recitations, poster-making, and essay-writing competitions.
