Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday strongly advocated for year-round tourism in Uttarakhand, emphasizing that the hill state should not have an “off-season” as it would significantly boost the economy and generate employment. Addressing a rally in Harsil after offering prayers at Mukhwa, the winter abode of Goddess Ganga in Uttarkashi district, Modi highlighted the unique beauty of Uttarakhand during winter. He urged visitors to explore the state beyond the traditional peak seasons, stating that this would allow them to experience its true essence.
“The government's vision for year-round tourism will strengthen the economy and create jobs for the youth,” he said, adding that it is essential for border areas to benefit from tourism. The prime minister also touched upon efforts to rehabilitate villages that were evacuated during the 1962 war with China. Additionally, he mentioned the recent approval of two major ropeway projects—Sonprayag to Kedarnath and Govindghat to Hemkund Sahib—which will significantly reduce travel time to just 30 minutes, making these pilgrimage sites more accessible.
Appealing to tourists to visit during winter, Modi remarked, “While the rest of the country is covered in fog, Uttarakhand basks in sunlight.” He emphasized the need for a “360-degree approach to tourism” to ensure the state’s full potential is realized. To further promote adventure tourism, the prime minister flagged off a trek and bike rally, encouraging greater exploration of the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.
