Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tribute to former Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Ashok Singhal on his birth centenary, recalling his decades of organisational work, social service and role in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. Singhal, who was born in Agra in 1926, became one of the prominent leaders of the VHP and remained associated with the organisation for several decades. In his tribute, Modi recalled his long association with Singhal and highlighted several aspects of his public life.

The Prime Minister said Singhal devoted much of his life to social service and initiatives aimed at supporting people in different parts of the country. He particularly referred to Singhal's work among tribal and rural communities and his involvement in relief activities following natural disasters, including the 2001 Gujarat earthquake.

Modi also recalled Singhal's emphasis on social harmony and efforts connected with education. Singhal was associated with initiatives aimed at expanding education in rural and tribal areas, including the Ekal Vidyalaya movement. Singhal's public life was also closely associated with the Ram Janmabhoomi movement in Ayodhya. As a senior VHP leader, he played a prominent role in mobilising support for the movement during the decades-long campaign over the disputed site.

Modi also referred to Singhal's interest in Indian classical music. The Prime Minister recalled occasions when Singhal would sing during meetings and gatherings, offering a personal glimpse of the VHP leader beyond his organisational responsibilities. The birth centenary has brought renewed attention to Singhal's long association with social organisations, cultural initiatives and the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. Modi's remarks focused on his contribution to public life and the importance he placed on service and social outreach.
