PIB Debunks AI-Generated Videos of Dharmendra Pradhan, Piyush Goyal; Blames Pakistani Propaganda Accounts

The Press Information Bureau's (PIB) Fact Check Unit has dismissed as fake a series of AI-generated videos circulating on social media that falsely depict Union Ministers Dharmendra Pradhan and Piyush Goyal making controversial statements. The government agency alleged that the manipulated clips were being spread by "Pakistani propaganda accounts" as part of an online misinformation campaign.

The PIB said the videos were created using artificial intelligence and digitally altered audio to falsely attribute remarks to the two ministers. It clarified that neither Dharmendra Pradhan nor Piyush Goyal made the statements featured in the viral clips and urged the public not to share the misleading content.

According to the Fact Check Unit, one of the fabricated videos falsely claims that Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan made inflammatory remarks, while another portrays Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal as threatening protesting students. The PIB described both videos as "AI-generated" and "digitally altered," warning that they were designed to mislead viewers and spread false narratives online.

The government's warning comes amid growing concerns over the misuse of generative AI tools to create convincing deepfake videos featuring political leaders and public figures. Advances in artificial intelligence have made it easier to manipulate facial expressions, voices and speech, making fabricated videos appear authentic unless carefully verified.

PIB has advised social media users to exercise caution before forwarding viral videos, especially those involving public officials or sensitive political issues. It urged citizens to verify such content through official government channels and trusted news organisations before believing or sharing it. The incident highlights the increasing challenge posed by AI-driven misinformation campaigns, particularly on social media platforms where manipulated content can spread rapidly within minutes. Experts have repeatedly warned that deepfakes have the potential to influence public opinion, damage reputations and create confusion during politically significant events.

As artificial intelligence becomes more sophisticated, authorities are placing greater emphasis on digital literacy and timely fact-checking to counter the spread of false information. The PIB reiterated that users should remain vigilant and rely on verified sources for accurate information rather than unverified viral posts.
