Pakistan is facing mounting international scrutiny after the International Human Rights Foundation (IHRF) alleged that security forces carried out a harsh crackdown on peaceful demonstrations in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), leading to the deaths of more than 32 civilians between June 8 and June 16, 2026. The IHRF criticized authorities for what it described as an excessive and disproportionate response to protesters linked to the Jammu and Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JKJAAC).

Tensions intensified after the JKJAAC was officially declared a banned organization under Pakistan’s anti-terrorism framework on June 5. The IHRF alleged that the decision was followed by widespread restrictions, including internet and mobile service disruptions, deployment of federal paramilitary personnel, large-scale arrests of activists and political figures, and limitations on movement across the region.

According to the rights group, more than 100 activists and community leaders have been detained without due process. The organization also expressed concern over the arrest of journalist Sohrab Barkat under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, saying the move raises serious questions about media freedom and the right to free expression.

The IHRF further stated that the recent developments are part of a recurring pattern of alleged human rights violations in PoJK. It referred to earlier crackdowns on JKJAAC-led demonstrations in May 2024 and October 2025, both of which reportedly resulted in civilian casualties. The organization argued that residents of the region continue to face limitations on political engagement, peaceful assembly, and association. It contended that such actions are inconsistent with Pakistan’s commitments under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).

Calling for immediate action, the IHRF urged Pakistani authorities and the PoJK administration to end the use of force against demonstrators, restore communication services, free those detained without legal justification, and lift the prohibition imposed on the JKJAAC. The group demanded an impartial international inquiry into the reported deaths of civilians and allegations of unlawful killings, including the case of activist Shahzeb Habib.
