Pakistan Court Steps In as Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi Win Relief Against Solitary Confinement

Pakistan's Islamabad High Court has provided significant relief to former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, directing prison authorities to ensure that neither is kept in solitary confinement at Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail. The ruling comes amid continuing allegations by Khan's family and supporters that the former prime minister has faced prolonged isolation and restrictions on meetings with relatives while in custody. Pakistan's authorities have denied allegations of mistreatment.

Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro directed the Adiala Jail administration to ensure that Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi are treated in accordance with prison rules. The court also ordered authorities to facilitate meetings between the couple and allow Khan's family members to visit him as permitted under jail regulations. In another important direction, the court asked prison authorities to arrange telephone conversations between Imran Khan and his sons. Khan was also ordered to be provided newspapers and books, while authorities were instructed to ensure that he receives appropriate medical facilities under prison rules.

The court's intervention followed petitions filed by Khan's sister, Aleema Khan, and Bushra Bibi's daughter, Mubashara Khawar Maneka. The petitions raised concerns over their isolation and restrictions on their basic rights while in prison. Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, has remained in prison since August 2023 following convictions in multiple cases, which he and his party have described as politically motivated. Bushra Bibi has also remained in custody following convictions in corruption-related cases.

The Islamabad High Court directed the Adiala Jail superintendent to implement its orders and submit a compliance report within 15 days. The ruling represents a significant judicial intervention amid growing concerns over Khan's prison conditions and access to family members, medical treatment and regular human contact. The decision also places renewed scrutiny on Pakistan's prison administration and its treatment of one of the country's most prominent political figures. While the government has consistently rejected allegations of mistreatment, the court's detailed directions underline the continuing controversy surrounding Imran Khan's conditions in custody.
