Pakistan has unexpectedly taken on a key role in facilitating peace talks between the United States and Iran, with its army chief, Asim Munir, emerging as the central figure in these efforts. As discussions continue and a possible extension of the current two-week ceasefire approaches, Munir has become the preferred intermediary between Washington and Tehran.

Munir, now widely regarded as the most powerful figure in Pakistan, has gained trust from both sides. US President Donald Trump even suggested he might visit Islamabad—where recent talks were held—if future negotiations lead to a peace agreement, praising both Munir and Pakistan’s leadership.

While these remarks were made, Munir was in Iran meeting top officials, including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, President Masoud Pezeshkian, and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. During last weekend’s lengthy 21-hour negotiations in Islamabad, Munir played an active role, welcoming leaders such as Ghalibaf and US Vice President JD Vance. Although the talks ended without a deal, both sides are considering extending the ceasefire to allow more time for negotiations.

Pakistan’s involvement has highlighted Munir’s growing influence and the trust he has built with both nations. Trump has openly praised him, while Iranian officials have also shown appreciation for his efforts. The country’s strong ties with both the US and Iran, along with its relationships with Saudi Arabia and China, have enabled it to act as a vital communication bridge.

Munir’s prominence has risen sharply in recent years. Appointed army chief in 2022 by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif after being sidelined by former leader Imran Khan, he gained further recognition following tensions with India. While Trump claimed to have mediated peace between the two countries, India rejected the assertion, though Pakistan supported it.

Since then, Munir has strengthened ties with the US, including multiple visits to Washington and meetings with Trump. At home, his influence has expanded significantly, marked by his elevation to field marshal and increased military authority. Islamabad appears to be preparing for further negotiations, with heightened security still in place after the recent talks. Despite these developments, signs of economic strain, such as power outages, remain visible. Munir’s growing diplomatic role and close ties with global leaders have positioned both him and Pakistan at the center of ongoing efforts to resolve the US-Iran conflict.
