Operation Amistad: India Sends Relief and Medical Aid to Earthquake-Hit Venezuela

India has launched a major humanitarian mission, Operation Amistad, to assist Venezuela after a powerful earthquake caused widespread destruction in the country. The operation includes the deployment of Indian Air Force aircraft carrying emergency relief supplies, medical equipment, and a specialised Indian Army medical team to support affected communities.
As part of the mission, two Indian Air Force C-17 aircraft have been sent to Venezuela carrying a field hospital unit along with more than 35 tonnes of essential relief material. The supplies include medicines, medical equipment, and other items required for emergency response efforts. The Indian Army has also dispatched a 41-member medical team equipped to provide urgent healthcare assistance to people injured in the earthquake. The team will work in challenging conditions and help strengthen medical support in areas where local healthcare facilities have been affected.
The name of the mission, Operation Amistad, means “friendship” in Spanish and reflects India’s message of solidarity with Venezuela during a difficult time. The initiative highlights India’s growing role in international disaster relief operations and its commitment to extending assistance beyond its borders. The earthquake caused significant damage across parts of Venezuela, creating urgent needs for medical care, rescue support, and essential supplies. Several countries and international organisations have stepped forward with assistance as rescue and recovery efforts continue.
India has previously carried out similar humanitarian missions during major disasters, providing medical teams, rescue personnel, and relief materials to affected nations. These operations have helped deliver immediate support during emergencies when local resources are under severe pressure. With Operation Amistad, India aims to provide timely medical assistance and relief support while standing with the people of Venezuela during the recovery phase following the devastating earthquake.
