Neeraj Chopra, India’s two-time Olympic medalist, has addressed the controversy surrounding the invitation extended to Pakistani javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem for the upcoming Neeraj Chopra Classic. In his first public statement on the issue, posted on social media, Chopra responded to the backlash and clarified the timeline of the invitation.

Neeraj shared that the invite was sent two days before the Pahalgam attack and emphasized that, given the tragic events, Nadeem’s participation is no longer possible. Chopra expressed his emotional distress over the situation, revealing that both he and his family have faced a wave of hate and abuse. He also stressed the importance of understanding the full context and urged the public not to jump to conclusions.

In related news, Arshad Nadeem has officially confirmed his withdrawal from the Neeraj Chopra Classic, citing his preparations for the upcoming Asian Athletics Championships in South Korea. Nadeem expressed his gratitude for the invitation but explained that his focus is on achieving peak form for the championships, which start on May 27.

The Neeraj Chopra Classic, scheduled for May 24 at Bengaluru’s Sree Kanteerava Stadium, is set to be a landmark event in Indian athletics. Recognized with Gold Label status by World Athletics, the event is the highest-rated athletics meet ever hosted in India. The one-day competition, organized by Neeraj Chopra in collaboration with JSW Sports, the Athletics Federation of India, and World Athletics, aims to highlight the sport of javelin throwing and elevate India’s standing in international athletics.

The 2025 edition will feature an impressive international lineup, including Olympic medalists and world champions such as Anderson Peters (Grenada), Thomas Rohler (Germany), Julius Yego (Kenya), and Curtis Thompson (USA), among others. The Indian contingent is expected to feature athletes like DP Manu and Shivpal Singh, with the final roster to be announced soon.
