A series of targeted killings of high-profile terrorists across Pakistan has raised serious questions about security and internal dynamics within militant networks. From Karachi to Lahore, several individuals designated as “most-wanted” by India have been gunned down in mysterious circumstances, with local authorities often attributing the attacks to “unknown gunmen.”

The latest incident involved Amir Hamza, a founding member of Lashkar-e-Taiba, who was shot by motorcycle-borne assailants in Lahore. He sustained bullet injuries and is currently undergoing treatment, according to police. 

This attack is part of a broader pattern observed over the past two to three years, during which several senior figures linked to terror outfits such as Jaish-e-Mohammed and Hizbul Mujahideen have been killed in Pakistan or Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Most of these killings remain unsolved, with attackers rarely identified. 

Among those eliminated was Shahid Latif, accused of orchestrating the 2016 Pathankot airbase attack. He was shot dead in Sialkot in October 2023. Another figure, Mufti Qaiser Farooq, was killed in Karachi after being targeted near a religious institution. 

In another gruesome case, Khwaja Shahid was abducted and later found beheaded in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, with signs of torture on his body. Similarly, Akram Khan Ghazi was gunned down by unidentified attackers on motorcycles. 

Earlier, in 2022, Mistry Zahoor Ibrahim, a key figure in the 1999 Indian Airlines hijacking, was shot dead at close range in Karachi while living under a false identity. 

Despite the recurring nature of these targeted killings, Pakistani authorities have largely failed to identify the perpetrators or establish clear motives. Local reports frequently describe the attackers as “unidentified gunmen,” fuelling speculation about possible internal rivalries, factional disputes, or covert operations.

The pattern of assassinations across multiple cities suggests a coordinated and sustained campaign, though no group has claimed responsibility so far. The developments have added a new layer of intrigue to Pakistan’s already complex security landscape, particularly concerning the presence and activities of proscribed terror outfits within its borders.
