John Lithgow is reportedly in final negotiations to play Professor Albus Dumbledore in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter TV series. The six-time Emmy-winning actor is in talks to take on the role of the wise and revered Hogwarts headmaster in what is expected to be a major, long-term adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s beloved fantasy books.
Rumors about the casting of key characters have been circulating for months, and news of Lithgow’s potential involvement has sparked widespread industry buzz. However, HBO has yet to confirm the reports. “We understand that a project of this scale will attract speculation,” the network said in a statement. “As we move forward with pre-production, we will only announce details once agreements are finalized.”
The Harry Potter TV series is designed to run for a decade, with each season delving deeply into one book. HBO Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys previously described the show as a “faithful adaptation” that aims to stay true to the spirit of the original novels.
Dumbledore, one of the most iconic characters in the Harry Potter universe, serves as the headmaster of Hogwarts and the leader of the Order of the Phoenix, a secret group dedicated to stopping the Dark Wizard, Lord Voldemort. He was previously portrayed by the late Richard Harris in the first two Harry Potter films and later by Michael Gambon for the rest of the franchise. Jude Law also played a younger version of the character in the Fantastic Beasts prequels.
If Lithgow officially secures the role, he will bring his own interpretation to the beloved wizard, continuing the legacy of one of the most enduring figures in the Harry Potter saga.
