A brave Jammu and Kashmir police officer lost his life in a tense shootout with suspected terrorists in Udhampur district, highlighting the relentless dangers faced by those guarding the region. Security forces are pressing on with a high-stakes operation amid the rugged terrain, where intelligence tips often spark life-or-death confrontations.

The operation began near Sohan village in the Majalta area on December 15, after intelligence suggested that three militants, reportedly linked to the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad group, were hiding in dense forests. A joint team comprising the J&K Police's elite Special Operations Group (SOG), the Indian Army, and the CRPF moved in swiftly, leading to an intense exchange of fire around evening. Darkness and steep hills slowed the combing efforts, but forces quickly sealed escape routes to trap the suspects.

The fallen officer, Amjad Pathan from Mendhar in Poonch district, was part of the small SOG unit that first engaged the militants. He succumbed to injuries sustained during the initial gunfire. Reports indicate that one terrorist was wounded, while two other SOG personnel were injured in follow-up clashes the next morning. The operation continues as forces work to neutralize the remaining threat. Inspector General of Police Jammu, Bhim Sen Tuti, noted the precision of the intelligence that launched the mission, emphasizing how such operations rely heavily on local insights amid challenging conditions.

Udhampur’s strategic location—close to military hubs like the Northern Command and bordering Pakistan—makes it a frequent hotspot for such incursions. Similar skirmishes in nearby Basantgarh and Kathua earlier this year also claimed lives, underlining the persistent risks for security personnel. With 17 security personnel lost in J&K encounters in 2025 alone, these events serve as a stark reminder of the human cost behind efforts to maintain stability, where every forested patch can hide danger. As reinforcements continue to arrive, both locals and forces hope for a decisive end to the operation without further tragedy.
