The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly was adjourned for 30 minutes after chaos erupted shortly after the budget session resumed on Friday, March 27, 2026, following a five-week break. The disruption began during the Question Hour when members from both the treasury and opposition benches rose from their seats, shouted slogans, and created a ruckus, ignoring repeated appeals for order by Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather.

Legislators from the ruling parties, including the National Conference, Congress, CPI(M), and several Independents, joined hands with opposition PDP members to raise slogans condemning Israel over the reported assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. At the same time, BJP members staged their own protest, displaying placards and demanding the establishment of a National Law University in Jammu, further intensifying the disorder in the House.

The Assembly’s budget session had resumed in Jammu on March 27 after a recess that followed its initial phase held between February 2 and February 20. During the earlier phase, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah presented the budget on February 6. The House also approved grants for multiple departments after detailed discussions conducted in extended sittings held twice daily.

The ongoing session is scheduled to conclude on April 4. As per the official legislative agenda, March 30 and April 1 have been set aside for private members’ bills, while March 31 and April 2 are designated for discussions on private members’ resolutions. The chaotic scenes highlight sharp political differences within the Assembly, with multiple issues competing for attention and disrupting normal legislative proceedings.
