An Indian-origin Muslim man is battling serious injuries after being stabbed more than 15 times inside a shopping mall in Utah in what authorities believe was a religion-motivated attack. Police say the suspect allegedly questioned the victim about his faith before launching the assault in broad daylight. The incident took place at Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City, where the victim, identified as Sohail, was working at a kiosk. According to investigators, the suspect first asked him where he was from and then whether he was Muslim. Moments after receiving a reply, the attacker allegedly pulled out a knife and repeatedly stabbed the victim.

Witnesses at the mall quickly intervened, overpowering the attacker and taking away the weapon before police officers reached the scene. Authorities said the swift response by bystanders likely prevented an even more serious outcome. Sohail was rushed to a nearby hospital with multiple stab wounds. He underwent emergency treatment and remains in serious condition. His family has launched a fundraising campaign to help cover medical expenses as he begins what is expected to be a long recovery.

Police arrested 48-year-old Peter Michael Larsen at the scene. According to court documents, Larsen allegedly admitted that he targeted the victim because of his religion and told investigators he intended to kill Muslims. He has been booked on suspicion of attempted murder and weapons-related offences, while prosecutors continue reviewing the case for additional charges.

Investigators also revealed that the suspect was on parole for a previous violent felony at the time of the attack and is currently being held without bail. The Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office is examining the evidence before filing formal charges. The attack has drawn strong condemnation from civil rights groups, including the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), which described the incident as a disturbing example of anti-Muslim violence and urged public leaders to speak out against religious hatred.

The case has sparked concern among Indian-origin residents and Muslim communities across the United States, renewing calls for stronger action against hate crimes and better protection for minority communities. Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing, and additional details are expected as the legal process moves forward.
