The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has taken a major step towards strengthening the country’s maritime capabilities with the induction of its first indigenously developed Air Cushion Vehicle (ACV) in Goa. The development marks a notable achievement in India’s efforts to enhance coastal security while promoting domestic defence manufacturing. The commissioning ceremony was attended by senior Coast Guard officials and representatives from the shipbuilding sector, highlighting the significance of the project for both national security and the indigenous defence industry.

The newly inducted hovercraft is the first in a series of six ACVs being constructed by Goa-based Chowgule & Company Private Limited. The initiative aligns with the government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision, which seeks to boost self-reliance in critical sectors, including defence and shipbuilding. The project is expected to contribute significantly to the growth of India's maritime infrastructure and manufacturing ecosystem.

According to the Coast Guard, the hovercraft has been designed to support a variety of operational requirements and will strengthen the force's ability to carry out missions in challenging coastal environments. Unlike conventional vessels, the ACV can operate efficiently in shallow waters, marshlands and other difficult terrains, making it a valuable asset for maritime operations.

Officials noted that the platform will improve the Coast Guard's readiness to address both security-related threats and humanitarian emergencies. Its versatility is expected to enhance coastal surveillance, search-and-rescue efforts, disaster response operations and rapid deployment capabilities. The induction also reflects India's broader strategy of reducing reliance on imported defence equipment and encouraging domestic production of advanced maritime platforms. By developing such technologies within the country, India aims to build a stronger and more resilient defence manufacturing base.

The Coast Guard reiterated that fleet modernisation remains a key priority, and the addition of the indigenous hovercraft represents another important milestone in that direction. The new ACV is expected to play a crucial role in safeguarding India's maritime interests while improving operational effectiveness along the country's vast coastline. Beyond its technological significance, the induction underscores India's commitment to strengthening maritime security and preparing for evolving challenges in the coastal and offshore domain.
