India has welcomed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the United States and Iran, with National Security Adviser Ajit Doval describing the development as a reason for “cautious optimism.” He said the agreement could have a positive impact on regional peace, energy security, and international trade.

Addressing the 16th BRICS National Security Advisers’ Meeting, Doval said India hopes the understanding between Washington and Tehran succeeds. He noted that reopening the Strait of Hormuz is an important step that could help improve the flow of energy supplies and reduce uncertainty in global markets. According to Doval, stability in the region and smoother movement through the strategically significant waterway could help remove obstacles affecting global supply chains. He pointed out that improved connectivity would help ease shortages of essential commodities, including fertilisers and chemicals.

The NSA also highlighted the wider economic importance of maintaining freedom of navigation in the region. He said uninterrupted maritime movement would not only benefit countries in West Asia but could also contribute to stronger economic growth and prosperity worldwide. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also welcomed the ongoing peace efforts between the US and Iran amid tensions in West Asia. He said India hopes the agreement will help restore stability in the region, protect freedom of navigation, and support global commerce.

In a statement shared on X, PM Modi said the conflict had created major economic challenges and caused loss of life across several countries. He expressed hope that further discussions on unresolved matters would lead to a lasting and comprehensive agreement. The US Vice President JD Vance had earlier described the latest technical discussions between Washington and Tehran, linked to the 14-point MoU aimed at ending hostilities in West Asia, as a productive round of talks. He said progress was made on key areas, including maritime security, regional stability, and nuclear-related issues concerning Iran.
