The 6th edition of the India-Japan joint military exercise, Dharma Guardian 2025, is currently being conducted at the East Fuji Training Area in Japan. This year’s exercise, which commenced on February 24 and will conclude on March 9, 2025, marks a major milestone in bilateral defense cooperation, with troop participation expanded to a company-strength level for the first time.
The focus of Dharma Guardian 2025 is on joint urban warfare and counter-terrorism operations under a UN mandate. The exercise emphasizes physical endurance, joint planning, and tactical drills, aiming to refine combat skills, operational coordination, and disaster response strategies. Both forces are engaging in realistic training scenarios to enhance interoperability and improve their ability to respond to modern security challenges. Beyond military training, Dharma Guardian fosters cultural exchange and mutual understanding between the Indian and Japanese troops. It highlights the growing India-Japan strategic partnership, reinforcing their commitment to regional security, peace, and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
This year’s exercise follows key diplomatic engagements, including the Indian Army Chief’s visit to Japan in October 2024, which strengthened defense ties between the two nations. Dharma Guardian is part of a broader framework of military collaboration that includes other joint exercises such as Malabar (naval) and Shinyuu Maitri (air force). By enhancing operational synergy and trust, Dharma Guardian 2025 plays a vital role in advancing India and Japan’s defense cooperation, further solidifying their shared vision for a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific.
