Cross-border bus services between India and Bangladesh have resumed after an 18-month suspension, marking a significant step toward restoring people-to-people connectivity following political changes in Dhaka. The bus service between Dhaka and Kolkata resumed operations this week after being halted amid political unrest and diplomatic uncertainties during Bangladesh’s prolonged transition period. Officials from both countries described the restart as a positive move toward normalising bilateral relations.

Suspension Linked to Political Instability

The bus routes had been suspended during Bangladesh’s political turmoil, which disrupted transport links and cross-border movement. Security concerns, administrative uncertainty, and shifting government priorities had delayed the resumption of regular passenger services. With the BNP forming the new government after recent elections, authorities have moved quickly to restore regional connectivity, signalling a renewed focus on strengthening ties with neighbouring countries, particularly India.

Boost to Travel, Trade, and Cultural Exchange

The bus service is expected to benefit tourists, families, traders, and medical travellers who rely on affordable road transport between the two countries. The Dhaka-Kolkata route has historically been one of the most popular cross-border bus corridors, facilitating cultural exchange and economic activity. Transport officials said passenger demand remains strong, with many travellers welcoming the restoration of a convenient and cost-effective travel option.

Sign of Improving Bilateral Relations

The resumption of bus services is being viewed as an early confidence-building measure under the new BNP-led administration. Analysts say improved transport connectivity often reflects broader diplomatic stability and mutual willingness to strengthen cooperation.

Both governments are also expected to review and restore additional cross-border transport links, including rail and other bus routes, in the coming months.
